Finally saw Sunrise (1927) with a live score. Nearly a hundred years old and the city sequence still feels like it was shot yesterday.

The googly eye is the whole thesis and it takes them two hours to earn it. Nothing about my mother has ever been legible to me until a man in a fanny pack explained that being kind is a strategy, not a surrender.
Second watch with the film club and the arguing started before the credits finished. Half tonight thinks the hot-dog universe is the joke. It's the load-bearing wall.
Exhausting in a way I think is deliberate and a way I think isn't. The rocks are perfect. Forty minutes around them are not. I'd rather a film swing this hard and miss than never leave the ground - but I'm putting that in writing so nobody mistakes me for a hater.
The film's trick is scale without condescension: a laundromat, a tax office, and a rooftop of hot-dog fingers all get the same emotional weight, because to a person in the middle of a bad day, they do. The action is inventive; the argument underneath it is what lands.
Maximalism has a cost and the middle stretch pays it. But the last twenty minutes justify the noise: nothing here is random, it's all one long argument for tenderness, made by people who clearly tried the cynical version first.
